Who says healthy food can’t taste great? Who says delicious food can’t be healthy? Certainly not Susan Klein, owner/chef of the new Fit Foodz Café in Boca Raton.
To call Fit Foodz Café a health-food restaurant is a misnomer. It’s simply a restaurant that offers many of the foods that people love, prepared in a healthier fashion. Everything is made fresh daily with the highest-quality ingredients, Klein notes, and is either baked or grilled; nothing is fried. A Boca Raton nutritionist consultant approves all the food.
Chef Susan notes, “people don’t have to give up the foods they enjoy – during the holidays, or any time of year – they just need to find healthier ways to eat.”
And that’s the philosophy behind her Fit Foodz Café: food that people love, but prepared in a healthy, delicious fashion. It is a unique concept that features individually portioned and calorie-controlled meals. So, you get the satisfying taste, but without all the unhealthy extras.Klein can relate to people’s struggle. After a fitness regimen and an eating plan that helped her lose 50 pounds, she was looking for a way to enjoy the foods she craved without gaining back the weight she’d lost. So, she opened Fit Foodz Café, an innovative eatery that gives people the foods they love, but in healthy choices.
Have a passion for pasta? Try the Spaghetti Squash with Turkey Bolognese. Enjoy chicken? Order the Tuscan Chicken, made with fresh tomato, capers, red onion, balsamic and extra virgin olive oil. In the mood for a “burger”? Dig into a BBQ Bacon Burger, made with turkey, turkey bacon, reduced-calorie barbecue sauce, and low-salt/low-fat Swiss cheese. It’s available with no bun or on a whole grain bun. Got a sweet tooth? Try the Black Bean Brownie. Need something to “grab and go”? Choose a homemade protein bar. The Spaghetti Squash with Turkey Bolognese, and the Black Bean Brownie, incidentally, are two of the most popular items on a diverse menu that includes protein, grains, greens, smoothies, juices, snacks, sides and baked goods.
Everything on the menu is made fresh daily and is either baked or grilled; nothing is fried. A Boca Raton nutritionist consultant approves all the food. “Eating healthier seems to be the way the world is going these days,” the chef/owner observes. “Healthy” foods have a reputation for tasting dry and bland, but Klein says they don’t have to. “We use a lot of fresh herbs and spices, along with the highest-quality ingredients. You can throw in a lot of seasoning because it’s not going to add [a lot of fat and calories]. All it does is enhance the flavor. And, that’s what people want — flavor.”
The restaurant can handle any event — be it a holiday dinner, an office party or a private celebration — for 10 people up to several hundred. While Klein prefers a three-day notice, she can cater an event the next day if the customer orders items that have already been prepared.
One of her most popular items is Chicken Lollipops: chicken wing drumettes that are shaped like lollipops. “They are baked, and served with a light soy dipping sauce,” Klein explains. “We use a whole wheat bread crust, a little bit of paprika, a little bit of this and a little bit of that.
“They look different and taste fabulous. Everybody loves the. They are a fun, finger-type food, and a healthy alternative to people who like to eat with their hands.” “I wanted a restaurant-type business that offered fresh, healthy, delicious food,” Klein explains. “It’s about offering healthy alternatives. People get to eat the things they love, but without all the fat and calories.
